Dental Cleaning FAQs
Do dental hygienists do professional teeth cleanings?
Generally, dental hygienists perform dental cleanings and polish patients’ teeth. They are trained and qualified to also take X-rays, apply fluoride and dental sealants, and complete oral health assessments. This includes measuring your gum pockets and examining your teeth, gums, tongue, lips, and jaw joints.
Our dental hygienists can also provide gum disease care and patient education focused on improving at-home oral hygiene.
What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A regular dental cleaning is completed by a dental hygienist and doesn’t require local anesthesia. It usually takes 15-30 minutes of your time and involves removing plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth and along the gumline. These cleanings are recommended every six months.
Deep cleanings, however, are also referred to as scaling and root planning, which is a two-part process that involves removing plaque above and below the gumline before smoothing and reshaping the roots of teeth so that bacteria do not reattach. This often requires a longer appointment and the use of local anesthesia to numb the mouth.
What should I do if I need a dental cleaning but I’m too afraid to go to the dentist?
Regardless of how long it has been since your last dental cleaning in Albuquerque, if fear has kept you away, do not hesitate to ask your dentist about dental sedation. We offer nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation to help alleviate fears and nervousness.
If you need something to simply “take the edge off,” nitrous oxide is often enough to achieve these results, as you will remain at ease in the treatment chair and unbothered by your surroundings. If moderate to severe dental anxiety is what you experience, oral conscious sedation may be the better option because of its more powerful effects. You will enter a deep state of relaxation and remain calm throughout treatment.
What should I do if I have sensitive teeth and find dental cleanings uncomfortable?
If you have sensitive teeth, make sure to inform our dental hygienist before they start cleaning your teeth. If there are certain teeth that are more sensitive than others, you can indicate which ones so that they are more careful when cleaning around those areas.
If you experience intense tooth sensitivity, you may want to ask Dr. Boehmer about dental sedation to help ease your anxiety and possible discomfort. This will ensure you have a more comfortable experience while in the treatment chair.
Cases of chronic sensitivity may require you to use a desensitizing toothpaste at home so your next dental cleaning is more comfortable.
If you prefer, you can also ask your hygienist about receiving a fluoride treatment after your cleaning, as this can help remineralize tooth enamel and reduce sensitivity.
